How to Floss Your Teeth Properly

Most people know that you should floss your teeth at least once each day, but not everyone knows how to do it properly. Dr. Michael Klein is a family and cosmetic dentist in Encinitas CA. He is always happy to give his patients advice on flossing and other oral hygiene tips. Call your Dentist Encinitas office today to learn more.

Why Flossing is Important

Flossing your teeth every day removes plaque, which can build up into tartar. It also dislodges tiny particles of food that become trapped between the teeth where your brush doesn’t reach, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Flossing also helps your teeth look brighter and feel fresher. As well as contributing to your oral health by keeping periodontal disease at bay, flossing also reduces your risk of heart disease. Flossing once a day after brushing should be part of your daily oral hygiene routine. The best time to floss is in the evening so that your teeth remain clean while you sleep.

Tips for Proper Flossing

Step One: Remove a piece of floss around 18 inches long. Wind the majority of it around one of your middle fingers and a little around the other middle finger, leaving an inch or two in between.

Step Two: Grip the floss firmly between your thumbs and forefingers.

Step Three: Gently guide the floss between your teeth, holding it firmly against the tooth, moving it up and down.

Step Four: Repeat on the rest of your teeth, moving to a clean section of floss as you go.

Alternatives to String Floss

Dentist Encinitas patients who have difficulty using string floss can choose from other alternatives including:

  • Disposable floss picks
  • Interdental brushes
  • Water flossers
  • Sonic air floss
  • Dental picks
